Deadbolt Locks

DEADBOLT LOCKS
When you turn a key in the lock of a deadbolt, the bolt slides in or out of an opening in the door jamb. Deadbolts are considered to be secure locks that are difficult to open without a key, especially when compared to a spring-loaded lock, the kind you see in the center of a doorknob. While spring latches can be pushed back manually, deadbolts can't — which is why they're called deadbolts. They're dead, or unmovable.

Common types

If a deadlock is actuated by cylinders, it can have one or two cylinders. A single cylinder deadlock has a slot for a key on one side and a twist knob for operation on the other. Since a key can be used in both sides of a double cylinder lock, there is no need for (and frequently no presence of) a twist knob. By preventing  unauthorized access to the inside twist knob, the door cannot be accidentally unlocked (via a nearby window, for example). Due to their potential difficulty in opening from the inside and violation of fire safety laws, double cylinder locks are occasionally outlawed in certain places. Additionally, some lock manufacturers offer “lockable” knobs, which require a key on one side (usually external),

Samuel  Segal  created  the  vertical  deadbolt,  which  is  variation  of  the  common  lock.
When  burglar  tries  to  break  the  lock  out  of  the  door  by  inserting  crowbar  between  the  door  and  the  jamb,  vertical  deadbolts  prevent  jimmying.

  • Deadbolts  of  other  varieties  include:
  • Classroom-function  (thumb-turn  only  unlocks  door)  (thumb-turn  only  unlocks  door)
  • exit-only  capability  (no  external  cylinder)
  • button-operated  deadbolt  (mechanical  or  electrical)
  • single  detachable  thumb-turn  cylinder

Safety

The double cylinder configuration poses a security risk. Without the proper key, residents will be unable to escape through double-cylinder locked doors in the case of a fire. In house fires, this is frequently a preventable cause of death. [Reference needed] [3] By only locking the deadlock when there are no people inside the building, or by keeping the key close to the keyhole, the risk can be reduced. Since the purest air is at floor level and one may be crawling to reach the escape, some fire departments advise placing the key where it is most accessible, close to the entrance at floor level.

You should be aware of single-cylinder deadlocks (with an unlocked twist mechanism)
